The programme covers a range of topics suitable for Years 11-13 that relate to Levels 1-3 NCEA – National Certificate of Educational Achievement Standards, the International Baccalaureate Curriculum and Cambridge International New Zealand.
Tiritiri Matangi’s Secondary Education programme gives secondary school students the chance to understand ecological processes, the impact of humans on our environment and learn about New Zealand’s unique ecology and biodiversity.
Woven through this educational experience, is an understanding of the interconnectedness of humans and nature, as exemplified through the Māori world view, “Ko au te whenua, ko te whenua ko au”, “I am the land, the land is me”.

Sustainable use of an environment
NCEA Geography 1.3. (Internal) For this programme, students will gain a firm understanding of the principles of sustainability and its application. The programme includes worksheets and a 15-20 minute presentation. AS91009.
Pest Free Tiritiri Matangi
NCEA Science 1.12. For this programme, students will compare and contrast the mainland environment with Tiritiri’s pest-free environment. As part of this class, students will learn about the ecological impacts of removing pests from a highly modified environment. AS90951
Report on a biological issue
NCEA Biology 1.2 In this programme, teachers can choose from a variety of topics which include; rubbish disposal, possum control, fishing, introduced birds or mammals, biological control, use of 1080, burning fossil fuels, biosecurity, marine reserves. AS90926
Education for Sustainability (EFS)
NCEA 2 & 3. This programme can be applied to a number of curriculum areas including Art, Economics, Geography, Health and Physical Education, Māori, Marketing, Religious Education/Studies, Science and Tourism.
Practical investigation
NCEA Biology 2.1 (Internal) For this programme students will carry out a practical investigation in a biology context under supervision e.g rocky shore study with teacher schedule, student instructions and support available. AS 91153
Genetic variation and change
NCEA Biology 2.5 This gives students the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of genetic variation and change. A 15-20 minute presentation and accompanying worksheet will describe and demonstrate three effects: genetic drift, bottleneck effect and founder effect. AS 91157
Ecological pattern recognition
NCEA Biology 2.6 In this supervised programme, students will investigate a pattern in an ecological community. These include a rocky shore zonation study and succession of pōhutukawa monoculture. AS 91158 (Internal)
The use of open sanctuaries
NCEA Biology 3.2 In this programme, students will learn to integrate their biological knowledge to develop an informed response to a socio-scientific issue. As part of the programme, students will take part in a guided walk, receive a lecture and be given specific resource material such as research papers. AS91602 (Internal)
Responses of plants and animals to their environment
NCEA Biology 3.3 This programme will focus on plant and animal responses to the changing and pest free environment on Tiritiri. Worksheet with a 15-20minute presentation available. AS91603
Evolutionary processes
NCEA Biology 3.5 Students will gain an understanding of evolutionary processes leading to speciation. Worksheet with a 15-20 minute presentation available. AS901695
Biodiversity
Y12-13 International Baccalaureate International Baccalaureate students visit Tiritiri to gain a better understanding of the biodiversity and often undertake rocky shore studies.
