Depending on how you’ve joined, it takes a few days for our volunteer team to process your details and issue a membership number. If you’ve provided an email address you’ll first receive an automatically generated receipt, and then a few days later your welcome letter will arrive.

How do I leave a gift to the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi?
Thank you for considering leaving a gift in your will to the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi.
Bequests provide vital funds to help secure the future of the Island’s precious flora and fauna.
Types of gifts
General gift – Leaving a general gift to Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi (SoTM) gives us the flexibility to respond to the Island’s most urgent needs. Here are some of the ways that your donations help:
- Managing the Island’s habitats to increase both biomass and biodiversity,
- Maintaining our guiding tracks and the interpretative signage,
- Long-term monitoring of the Island’s birds, reptiles and invertebrates,
- Planning and undertaking new translocations.
Mel Galbraith Citizen Science Fund – Mel Galbraith was a founding member of SoTM, a teacher, lecturer, mentor and scientist who led many complex projects. He was a passionate advocate for Citizen Science, in which volunteers contribute to conservation initiatives by participating in science-based projects. This fund is established to foster and encourage Citizen Science projects on Tiritiri Matangi for the benefit of its ecological restoration.
Growing Minds and Education Programmes – Inspiring the next generation of conservationists. SoTM’s conservation educators provide tailored, hands-on learning experiences for visiting schools, ensuring that classes and subjects are appropriate for students from primary through to Year 13. Our Growing Minds Programme funds ferry and guiding costs, ensuring that lower-decile schools in the Auckland area also have the opportunity to visit the Island. As we are heavily reliant on grants for much of the Growing Minds and Education programmes, your bequest could help reduce our reliance on external funding.
Ray Walter Lighthouse and Maritime Fund – The lighthouse precinct on Tiritiri Matangi is nationally significant to New Zealand’s lighthouse maritime history, as recognised by Heritage New Zealand. Ray Walter, a former lighthouse keeper whose last posting was on Tiritiri Matangi, did much to help rebuild the station to its former glory. SoTM wants to continue this work to make it a shining example for all of New Zealand.

Tiritiri Matangi is a haven for Aotearoa, New Zealand’s native species, engaging and inspiring volunteers and visitors to make a difference in their environment.
You could structure your gift in several ways:
Percentage – Leave a percentage of your estate to support our work on Tiritiri Matangi.
Residue – The ‘residue’ of your estate – what is left after other disbursements.
Bequest – You may prefer to leave a specific sum of money or assets, such as real estate, shares, bonds, or items like artwork, for auction.
We strongly advise that you consult a solicitor before making or adjusting your will. Simple wording errors can cause confusion and delays in carrying out your wishes.
