The Tīeke/saddleback live on Tiritiri Matangi Open Sanctuary and are recognisable by their bold plumage, loud vocalisations and distinctive orange-red wattles. They are in the endemic New Zealand ‘wattlebird’ family (Callaeidae), along with Kōkako and the extinct Huia.
