Growing Minds
Financial support for schools
We believe that every school in Auckland should be given the opportunity to visit Tiritiri Matangi, so in 2012 the Tiri Supporters organisation started a programme called ‘Growing Minds’ which has enabled thousands of children from deciles 1-6 schools to visit this sanctuary.
How does it work?
The Growing Minds programme offers free travel for a maximum of 85 students from any one school and grants free ferry passage for one adult per six children.
The fee covers :
Student ferry fare – usually $25
Guiding fee – usually $2
What's not funded?
- The bus fare to and from the ferry
- Relief teachers for the day
- Additional accompanying adults above the 1:6 ratio.
Plan Your Trip...
If you wish to apply please do so at least six weeks before your trip. Before you come to the island, there are a few recommendations you may want to follow:
- Keep your student numbers under 40 pupils. Where possible keep your student numbers to around 40 pupils per day and split any larger groups over two days.
- Book in advance. For schools with larger groups of students we ask that you book trips over multiple days.
- Keep ratios low. With all student groups, including senior schools, we need at least a 1:10 adult to student ratio, so that there is one school adult per guided group.

Please do not submit any information as a Google Docs file.
Growing Minds application forms can be emailed to the address below. Bookings for all school visits may be made via email or phone.
We’d love to hear your feedback, so we ask that the teacher in charge of students visiting using Growing Minds funding completes an evaluation form after the visit.
