Astelia Banksii

Botanical name:  Astelia banksii
Maori name:  Wharawhara
Common name:  Coastal bush lily

Coastal bush lily occurs naturally around the upper 1/3 of the North Island.  The plants are dioecious (separate male and female).  Ripe berries on female plants are eaten by birds and were sometimes eaten by early Maori.  The leaves provided useful fibrous material.  Astelia means lacking a stem.

The genus Astelia contains about 25 species mainly in the Pacific and Australasia.  A large number (13 species) are endemic to New Zealand.
