Rapid Shade Producers

 

Rapid shade producers are species deemed to have the following qualities:
 

  • fast growing
  • able to withstand winds and salt spray

 

In short provide shelter for other species classed as long term canopy trees so they could become established.

 

Usually shorter lived than the long term canopy trees.

Long Term Canopy Trees

 

These are the long term canopy trees of the forest, the exception being the pohutakawa which is listed as a rapid shade producer because of the speed with which it grows.  It ultimately becomes an important member of the long term forest canopy.
