Banded Kokopu are slender tube shaped fish with the dorsal fin set far to the rear, near the tail. They are between 20 - 28 cms in length. Their colour is olive brown with a row of brownish vertical bands along the flanks. They don't have scales and their leathery skin is covered with a layer of mucus. They feed on the surface, mostly at night, on larvae of aquatic insects, like mosquito, and small invertebrates. On Tiritiri Matangi they can be found in the shallow pools of the forest stream at the base of the Kawerau Track (where the boardwalk starts). A survey was conducted in October 2001 and a total of 14 banded kokopu were sighted (along with 7 eels).
