Guided Tours

When visiting Tiritiri Matangi you have the option of taking a Guided Tour from the wharf up to the lighthouse. There are 2 routes used for guided walks.  The shorter route (Wattle Track) takes about an hour to an hour and a half, the longer route (Kawerau Track) takes about an hour and a half to two hours, during which time your guide will identify the variety of birds and bird song, native trees and points of interest. For first time visitors to the island this is a must! Many of the bird species on Tiritiri Matangi are only found on scientific reserves or in small remote areas of native bush on the mainland and may be unfamiliar to many visitors. Taking a guided tour will enhance the pleasure of your day on Tiritiri Matangi.

Guided Tour bookings are made with 360 DISCOVERY at the time that you book your ferry ticket - phone 0800 360 Discovery (0800-3603472) (free call within NZ only) or 09-424 5510. The number of guides we allocate to go each trip is dependent upon the number of visitors who have booked a guided walk. So to avoid disappointment on the day, please book your guided tour prior to arriving on the island.

Guides

The tours are guided by trained volunteers from the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. As the popularity of Tiritiri Matangi increases so too does our need to boost the number of guides, especially those who are able to guide mid-week. If you have a passion for birdlife, native trees, or just enjoy walking the beautiful island tracks, and are interested in becoming a guide, we would love to hear from you.

Guides are
  • provided with a Guiding Manual and are put through a training process involving on-track training
  • needed to guide at least twice a month but there are ample opportunities for you to guide more frequently, especially during the summer months
  • encouraged to attend regular seminars and workshops
  • kept abreast of the weekly changes on the island by means of a weekly email
If you would like to be part of this thoroughly worthwhile project, develop your knowledge, and 'do your bit' for New Zealand conservation, please contact the Guide Co-ordinator, Mary-Ann Rowland, by email
