Beilschmiedia tarairi

Taraire leaf22m.  A handsome spreading tree which naturally occurs mainly along stream sides or where the soil is good.  It was the most common medium sized understory tree of our Kauri forests. Distinctive young leaves with velvety brown underside covering or tomentum.

Flowers September - December.

Fruits in May – July.

The shiny dark elongated purple fruits are a favourite of the pigeon.

The Maori people boiled these fruits in water to prepare for food.

Long term canopy tree.
