30m.  A tall upright tree which forms a column a shape which is very distinctive in the New Zealand forest.  It has unusual stiff elongated serrated edged leaves.

Deep maroon red flowers from spring to early summer are pollinated by the birds a favourite of the nectar feeders.

Seeds June from flowers produced the year before. the seeds are loved by parrots.
