Vitex lucens

Puriri fruit20m. A distinctive large tree found in coastal and lowland forest.  The spreading branches produce bright shiny green leaves made up of five leaflets.

The pink flowers are bird pollinated and occur mainly early winter to spring but some seem to be produced throughout the year.  Bright red fruit are produced.

Puriri flowersA special food source for the N.Z. pigeon and other birds.

Although there were three trees originally on the island most of the seed was brought in.
