Phormium tenax     Flax

Flax flower spearsFlax bushA member of the lily family which is common throughout lowland swamps.  Leaves are from 1-3m long.  A very important source of nectar during flowering in November to January and then seed February to March .  Provides great shelter from the wind.

Selections of flax were made by the Maori as to suitability for weaving.

Also used for rope making.
